OLD MILL – SHINGLE MEMENTOS

One of South Perth’s historical landmarks, the Old Mill, was about to be renovated, and its old rooftop shingles to be discarded.

The shingles are made from beautiful hard wood and we thought it would be great to create art pieces from this so-called trash. We planned to engrave the Old Mill on these historical artefacts, depicting the Old Mill on its own remains, for people to be able to own and touch a piece of their local history.

Thanks to the generosity and kind support of the City of South Perth well represented by Local Historian Anthony Styan, we are able to obtain selected authentic roof shingles from the Old Mill.

The renovation coincided with the CEO of the City of South Perth, Geoff Glass, leaving his position. What would have been more fitting than creating a farewell gift made of historical shingles to recognize the CEO’s commitment to heritage?

After some experimenting, we created a laser engraved shingle with the Old Mill. It was an interesting and unusual project; depicting a historical building on its own remains for the person in charge of preserving the building.

We are wishing the former CEO Geoff Glass all the best and hope this unique memento was well received.

At the moment, we are preparing the remaining shingles for laser engraving. Stay tuned!
